This burgeoning mountain resort features 1,000 acres of terrain, ranging from gentle slopes for beginners to a vast selection of double black diamond runs to challenge the experts.

Alyeska offers 68 runs, a vertical drop of 2,500 feet and an average snowfall of 720 inches -- all surrounded by the majestic mountains of the Chugach Range. Cross-country skiers can enjoy 50 km of nordic trails.

The Alyeska Ski School features learn-to-ski packages as well as learn-to-ski-better packages for ages 4 to adult. Night skiing, with more than 2,000 vertical feet of lighted trails, extends the ski day to 9:30 p.m. two nights per week.

A 60-passenger aerial tram was designed in part to accommodate the many Alaskans and visitors who had yet to enjoy the spectacular view of the Chugach Mountains, Turnagain Arm and Glacier Valley from the summit of Mt. Alyeska.

Two cars take skiers, snowboarders and sightseers from the base of the mountain to the 2,300-foot level. The five-minute ride takes you up the dramatic north face of Mt. Alyeska to the Glacier Terminal, where you can take in the view from two restaurants.

In addition to alpine skiing, enjoy a day of snow machining, ice-skating, snowboarding, telemarking, skijoring, snowshoeing, glacier and Northern Lights viewing, or flight seeing.

We found the beaches sparsely populated and even the towns had few residents. You can certainly be yourself here.

Levera Beach - Grenada

The best of Grenada's 45 beaches are on the southwestern part of the island - with the exception of Levera Beach. It's part of the Levera National Park, and is at the northeastern tip of the island.But be prepared. We visited some of the calmest beaches in the Caribbean on Grenada, yet this isn't one of them. Because Levera Beach fronts the Atlantic ocean, we found there was some pretty rough surf at times.Because of this, the shoreline tends to drop more swiftly. But then, it's more dramatic here and makes for some of nature's best shows. In fact, we found one beach that was a dark red color, probably from the pigments in the cliff right above it.

Understand that if you come all the way out to Mexico's Riviera without visiting the Bahia Chileno, well - you might as well say you didn't have time to make it to the beach.Because this IS the beach - the one we think is the best in class for Cabo San Lucas. If rated by stars it would receive a grand "5 Stars" for "all-around" best. And here's why:Bahia Chileno (Chilean) is perfectly situated midway in the "Tourist Corridor". Hands down the finest Los Cabos beach for swimming, diving, kayaking, and snorkeling above the best reef in these parts. The locals know it,We found the beach wide, and the surf fairly flat. Each morning you'll find joggers from the nearby resorts. Swimming is safe - as opposed to many of the beaches we've reported on in the Cabos area. One side on Bahia Chileno is sandy all the way out to the reef. The other crescent is sandy but full of rock formations along the bottom, making it ideal for snorkel and diving.Underwater expect the best in colorful reef fish, sea turtles, squid, moray eels, sea urchins, those great gorgonians (sea fans), colorful sea sponges, and starfish. Look, but don't touch. Do take an underwater camera. This beauty you don't want to forget. too. Just ask and you'll be told what area of the beach is best for the sport you want to enjoy.There was a dive shop on the beach, but the host hotel was sold in 2005 and a new dive shop has not opened. Make arrangements in Cabo San Lucas.This beach is so easy to find. Bahia Chileno is close to the highway, around kilometer 14.5. There's a parking area with a bus stop. Walk from the parking lot toward the ocean - you can't miss this gem.

Inductee: Bob Marley (vocals, guitar; born February 6, 1945, died May 11, 1981)Bob Marley was reggae's foremost practitioner and emissary, embodying its spirit and spreading its gospel to all corners of the globe. His extraordinary body of work embraces the stylistic spectrum of modern Jamaican music - from ska to rock steady to reggae - while carrying the music to another level as a social force with universal appeal. Marley cannot claim to have had even one hit single in America, but few others changed the musical and cultural landscape as profoundly as he. As Robert Palmer wrote in a tribute to Marley upon his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, "No one in rock and roll has left a musical legacy that matters more or one that matters in such fundamental ways."
There's no question that reggae is legitimately part of the larger culture of rock and roll, partaking of its full heritage of social forces and stylistic influences. In Marley's own words, "Reggae music, soul music, rock music - every song is a sign." Marley's own particular symbolism derived from his beliefs as a Rastafarian - a sect that revered Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia (a.k.a. Ras Tafari) as a living god who would lead oppressed blacks back to an African homeland - and his firsthand knowledge of the deprivations of the Jamaican ghettos. His lyrics mixed religious mysticism with calls for political uprising, and Marley delivered them in a passionate, declamatory voice.
Reggae's loping, hypnotic rhythms carried an unmistakable signature that rose to the fore of the music scene in the Seventies, largely through the recorded work of Marley and the Wailers on the Island and Tuff Gong labels. Such albums as Natty Dread and Rastaman Vibration endure as reggae milestones that gave a voice to the poor and disfranchised citizens of Jamaica and, by extension, the world. In so doing, he also instilled them with pride and dignity in their heritage, however sorrowful the realities of their daily existence. Moreover, Marley's reggae anthems provided rhythmic uplift that induced what Marley called "positive vibrations" in all who heard it. Regardless of how you heard it - political music suitable for dancing, or dance music with a potent political subtext - Marley's music was a powerful potion for troubled times.
Marley was born on Jamaica to a young black mother and an older white father. A precocious musician, a teenaged Marley formed a vocal trio in 1963 with friends Neville "Bunny" O'Riley Livingston (later Bunny Wailer) and Peter McIntosh (later Peter Tosh). The group members had grown up in Trench Town, a ghetto neighborhood of Kingston, listening to rhythm and blues on American radio stations. They heard such R&B mainstays as Ray Charles, the Drifters, Fats Domino and Curtis Mayfield. They took the name the Wailing Wailers (shortened to the Wailers) because they were ghetto sufferers who'd been born "wailing." As practicing Rastas, they grew their hair in dreadlocks and smoked ganja (marijuana), believing it to be a sacred herb that brought enlightenment.
The Wailers recorded prolifically for small Jamaican labels throughout the Sixties, during which time ska - Jamaican dance music that drew from African rhythms and New Orleans R&B - was the hot sound. The Wailers had their first hit in 1963 with "Simmer Down," and they went on to record 30 sides in the "rude boy" ska style for Jamaican soundman Coxsone Dodd's Studio One. By this time, Marley's preoccupations were taking a spiritual turn, and Jamaican music itself was changing from the bouncy ska beat to the more sensual rhythms of rock steady. An association with Jamaican producer Lee Perry resulted in some of the Wailers' memorable recordings, including "Soul Rebel" and "Duppy Conqueror," and the albums Soul Rebel and Soul Revolution.
Though the Wailers were popular in Jamaica, it was not until the group signed with Chris Blackwell's Island Records in the early Seventies that they found an international audience. Their first recordings for Island, Catch a Fire (1972) and Burnin' (1973), were hard-hitting albums full of what critic Robert Christgau called Marley's "melodic propaganda." The latter contained "I Shot the Sheriff." Reggae aficionado Eric Clapton's version of the song went to #1 in 1974, which further carried the name of Marley and the Wailers beyond their Jamaican home base.
With the departure of founding members Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer after Burnin', Marley took center stage as singer, songwriter and rhythm guitarist. Backed by a first-rate band and the I-Threes vocal trio - which included his wife, Rita - Marley rose to the occasion with 1975's Natty Dread (his first album to chart in America) and the string of politically charged albums that followed. These included Rastaman Vibration, his highest-charting album (1976, #8); the fiery, oratorical Exodus (1977, #20); the mellow, herb-extolling Kaya (1978, #50), the live double-album Babylon by Bus (#1978, #102), and the politicized, defiant Survival (1979, #70) and Uprising (1980, #46). Uprising was the last studio album released during Marley's lifetime.
So influential a cultural icon had Marley become on his home island by the mid-Seventies that Time magazine proclaimed, "He rivals the government as a political force." On December 5, 1976, Marley was scheduled to give a free "Smile Jamaica" concert, aimed at reducing tensions between warring political factions. Two days before the scheduled concert, he and his entourage were attacked by gunman. Though Bob and Rita Marley were grazed by bullets, they electrified a crowd of 80,000 people when both took to the stage with the Wailers on the 5th - a gesture of survival that only heightened Marley's legend. It further galvanized his political outlook, resulting in the most militant albums of his career: Exodus, Survival and Uprising.
He was particularly moved throughout his career by the gulf between haves and have-nots, a culture of oppression that was particularly glaring in his poverty- and crime-ridden Jamaican homeland. "We should all come together and creative music and love, but [there] is too much poverty," Marley told writer Timothy White in 1976. "The most intelligent people [are] the poorest people...[but] people don't get no time to feel and spend [their] intelligence...The intelligent and innocent are poor, are crumbled and get brutalized. Daily."
Given the violent culture that he survived and transcended, Marley's death seems almost cruelly flukish. In 1977, surgeons removed part of a toe that had been injured in a soccer game, upon which a cancerous growth was found. This led to the discovery of spreading cancer in 1980, after Marley collapsed while jogging in Central Park, that claimed his life less than a year later. Though he died prematurely at age 36, the heartbeat reggae rhythms of the enormous body of music that Bob Marley left behind have endured. Moreover, Jamaica itself has been transformed by his charismatic personality and musical output. Marley was buried on the island with full state honors on May 21, 1981. In a crowning irony, given the reviled status that Rastafarians and their music had once suffered at the hands of the Jamaican government, Marley's pacifist reggae anthem, "One Love," was adapted as a theme song by the Jamaican Tourist Board. Meanwhile, Marley's music continues to find an audience. With sales of more than 10 million in the U.S. alone, Legend - a best-of spanning the Island Records years (1972-1981) - remains the best-selling album by a Jamaican artist and the best-selling reggae album in history.

This peaceful country offers brilliant diving and fishing off immaculate Caribbean islands sheltered by the second longest coral reef in the world. Pristine rainforests cover much of its land hiding previously undiscovered Maya ruins, many dating back as far as the fourth century - some still unexcavated.

An exciting range of accommodation mean visitors can stay in charming jungle lodges, country cottages, rain-forest research stations or beach cabanas. All trips are tailormade to encompass the exciting range of activities and areas that Belize has to offer.
Belize City with its old colonial charm acts as a good base to see surrounding sights, which include Belize Zoo, Altun Ha (Maya ruins), Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary and the Community Baboon Sanctuary. Northwest of Belize is Orange Walk District the home of Chan Chich - a jungle lodge built in the middle of an ancient Maya plaza and 250,000 acres of rainforest. Nearby is Cockscomb Basin Jaguar Reserve, which bustles with wildlife including margay, ocelot, puma, jaguarundi, tapir, deer, paca and hundreds of bird species. Placencia is relaxed and it's easy to do nothing but stretch out on sandy beaches. Activities however do include sport fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving, or photographing the rich wildlife in the region. Treks can be made to the Maya mountains, the Cockscomb Jaguar Reserve or the Monkey River to see the manatees.Toledo District attracts those who enjoy exploring in 4-wheel drive vehicles and visiting some of the lesser-known archaeological sites. Fallen Stones Lodge is an excellent place to stay off the beaten track.Ambergris Caye has the best variety of accommodation, restaurants and entertainment. It is considered the most developed and successful tourism area of Belize. In contrast St George's Caye is quiet and uncommercialised with accommodation in small cottages. It is a great spot for anyone who wants the quiet, simple pleasures of sky, sea and charming surroundings.

The island Piazza
The natural focal point of the Island, the Island Piazza, is the forum where elegant buildings cluster about a magnificent Indian Almond tree. Located on the beachfront, the dive and activity centre, housing both indoor and outdoor tuition areas, changing rooms and interesting displays is where many of the Island's land and marine activities are co-ordinated.Adjacent to the deck of the activity centre is the library. Built of coral blocks, it is undoubtedly one of the most exquisite examples of architecture on the Island and was already standing when construction of the lodge began.
Now, with its exterior walls renovated and its roof replaced, it houses a collection of books on topics of interest, various relics and artefacts. Ron Gerlach is the resident ecologist and runs a breeding programme for the highly endangered Seychelles giant tortoises and terrapin. His immaculate research centre is worth a visit and, depending on the time of the year, you may see turtle eggs (Hawksbill ad Green turtles) being incubated. For the energetic and fit, Silhouette Island has some challenging hiking trails.

Boating and island hopping: Boating around North Island or other trips could include visits to Mahé and the outer islands, including the spectacular bird islands, Arid and Cousin, and can be arranged at an extra cost.

The Garden Island

Kauai travel evolves around exploring and the island is small enough that all the attractions can be visited staying in just one place. The three main areas - Poipu in the south, the Royal Coconut Coast in the east and Hanalei / Princeville in the north.

The highest concentration of large international resorts and hotels is at Poipu, along the sunny South Coast. Accommodation here sits side by side along the three miles of sandy coastline which in places is broken by large rocky outcrops. There are lots of vacation rentals at the west end of Poipu, beyond which is the spectacular blowholes, a major tourist pull. Poipu has several championship golf courses and the hills inland are good for walking and exploring. There are some excellent coastal trails along the cliffs to the east offering absolute solitude.
More affordable accommodation can be found along the East Coast in the seaside towns of Lihue, Wailua and Kapa'a. Lihue Town is set inland, but the popular beach area of Kalapaki has fine sand alongside a protected harbour with safe swimming year round, some surfing breaks at the harbour mouth, and several world championship courses along the wild coastline beyond the beach. To the north of Lihue lots of accommodation can be found between the small towns of Wailua and Kapa'a, an area referred to as the Royal Coconut Coast for it was the main residence of the ancient Hawaiians and in early European times, was a large coconut plantation. Here there are some fine archaeological sites alongside the river valley and waterfalls to explore by kayak. The beaches here are OK, but often not good for swimming due to rough seas and dangerous currents.

The charming town of Hanalei along the rainforested North Coast with its adjacent purpose built resort village of Princeville back into some of the islands most breathtaking wilderness and has lovely remote beaches along a winding coastal road and several excellent places for snorkelling. Hanalei has several small hotels and lots of vacation rentals and bed and breakfast guesthouses The extremely beautiful Na Pali coastline is accessible from here, with one of the best hiking trails in the State winding its way through rainforest alongside the steep cliffs. Sailing charters and helicopter sightseeing of the otherwise inaccessible Na Pali Coast is Kauai's most popular tourist attraction.

The South West Coast of Kauai is rugged and wild - ideal for reflection but the wind-swept beaches are not safe for swimming and accommodation is thus limited. A few small hotels and some vacation rentals can be found around historic Waimea Town. This is the access point to the unusual Waimea Canyon, with stunning vistas and lots of hiking trails.

The EXIT festival came into being in the year 2000 as an act of rebellion against the regime of Slobodan Milosevic, that had for years been keeping Serbia out of touch with the outside world. That summer thousands of young people from Novi Sad had gathered in the campus park by the River Danube where concerts, parties and art performances took place. There were also discussions and debates where the young were able to express their opposition to the imposed nationalism, xenophobia, censorship and repression. The event lasted for 100 days and its grand finale was the ‘Get out to Vote’ party, which was held one day before the elections that saw the downfall of Milosevic.

Having been inspired by the enthusiasm brought on by the changes in the country, the team behind EXIT decided to continue the festival and create an event that had true regional importance. They chose the historic Petrovaradin Fortress as their venue, built high on the banks of the River Danube offering stunning views over the city of Novi Sad. The site was originally occupied by the Romans, and re-built by the Austro Hungarian Empire to defend against the Turks in the 17th Century.

Although very few people believed the idea would be a success, the first event held in July 2001 was visited by 200,000 people from all over Serbia and neighbouring ex Yugoslav countries.

The festival lasted for nine days, had five stages, a theatre and a cinema. As well as being able to see artists from Serbia, the EXIT audience also enjoyed performances by internationally recognised artists such as Finley Quaye, Kosheen, Roni Size, Banco de Gaia, Tony Allen, Max Romeo, Luke Slater, Salome de Bahia, and Tim Simeon. Performers from Croatia also played in front a large audience in Serbia, which was the first time since the war.

Those who came to EXIT spread the word that it was the best party in the Balkans and the following year the number of visitors doubled to 400,000. The festival camp sprang up on the other side of the river with more than a thousand tents and a grand Dance Arena for 25,000 people was constructed at the fortress where David Morales, Darren Emerson, Lottie, Erick Morillo, Marshal Jefferson, LTJ Bukem, Brenda Russell, Derrick Carter and Kevin Yost performed. Artists who took to the main stage were the Asian Dub Foundation, Rundamenthal, Transglobal Underground, Smoke City, Roni Size, KAOS Night and Horace Andy. An enormous banner was placed on the walls of the fortress facing the city of Novi Sad saying “SERBIA, ARE YOU READY FOR THE FUTURE?” The success of EXIT caused a chain reaction of festivals to spring up all over the country, but most of them did not manage to survive.

GETTING THERE

Cambodia lies at the heart of Indochina and is bordered by Thailand in the west, Laos in the north, Vietnam in the east and the Gulf of Thailand in the south. It is a country that, despite its relatively small size and large, dominant neighbours, has managed to retain its unique Khmer identity. Its cultural traditions predate those of Thailand and, unlike Vietnam, which expresses a marked Chinese influence, Cambodia’s cultural roots draw heavily from the Indian sub-continent.

The name Amansara derives from the twinning of the word aman (Sanskrit for peace) and apsara (the heavenly nymphs of ancient Hindu texts who emerged from the primordial churning of the oceans with the power to change their form at will and to bestow luck on those they favoured). The resort is located in Siem Reap, the cultural capital of Cambodia.

The airport at Siem Reap receives international flights and there are numerous 45-minute flights a week from Bangkok which are operated by Bangkok Airways. From Singapore, JET STAR ASIA now flies to Siem Reap each Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. SilkAir also has regular services from Singapore. The flight takes approximately two hours and 10 minutes. The return flight takes a little longer as it may be routed via Phnom Penh, the capital. International air services are also scheduled from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Danang in Vietnam, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and Hong Kong. Domestic air travel is mostly to and from Phnom Penh. However, there are flights frequently scheduled to smaller Cambodian towns.

Amansara is a 15-minute drive from Siem Reap airport and complimentary transfers are offered to guests on arrival and departure.

GETTING THERE

Phuket Island is off the west coast of the Kra Isthmus, 890km south of Bangkok. First mentioned by Ptolemy in the 2nd Century, the island was a regular port of call for Arab and Chinese ships. Portuguese and Chinese settlements began to appear in the 18th Century. Phuket is 50km long and 21km at its widest point. Connected to Thailand’s Phang Nga province by bridge, the island is surrounded by the azure Andaman Sea. Phuket is served by numerous domestic and regional flights and Bangkok, less than two hours flying time away, has connections to major international destinations. Complimentary private limousine transfers to and from Phuket airport are offered to guests and the 17km drive to Amanpuri takes 25 minutes.

CLIMATE

The dry season in Phuket extends from November to April. The rainy season is between May and October. While there can be frequent showers during the rainy season, these tend to be of short duration and are often followed by sunshine. Temperatures year-round range from 21°C to 35°C (70°F to 90°F). Water temperatures are always a pleasant 25°C to 28°C.

LANGUAGE

Thai is the official language but most people associated with travel on the island understand English.
